What it handles

Look right in search and when shared.

The title and description decide how a page appears in Google, and the Open Graph and X tags decide how a shared link looks. Get them wrong and links show up bare or cut off.

Every tag you need

Title, description, canonical link, robots, theme color, Open Graph and X card tags, written with valid quoting so a quote or an ampersand in your text cannot break the page.

See it before you publish

Switch between a Google result, a Facebook card and an X card. Text is cut where each shows its limit, so you see what visitors will really read.

Checked as you type

Counters for the title and description show whether they fit. You are told if the address is not a full https link, the image is missing, or the locale is wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title and description be?

Aim for a title of about 30 to 60 characters and a description of about 70 to 160. Google decides how much to show by width, so these are guides, not strict limits.

What image size should I use?

About 1200 × 630 pixels, a 1.91 to 1 shape, under 5 MB, as JPG or PNG. The address must be a full https link, because share tags do not work with relative paths.

Do I need both Open Graph and X tags?

Open Graph tags are used by Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and most other sites, and X uses them too when its own are missing. The only X tag you need is the card type. Writing them all out is harmless and more explicit.

Why does the canonical address matter?

It tells search engines which address is the main one when a page can be reached several ways, such as with tracking parameters. Use the clean address without any query.

Will Facebook show my new tags straight away?

Not always. Platforms keep a copy of what they saw the first time a link was shared. After changing tags, use the platform's own debugger tool to make it fetch the page again.
