Anything separated by spaces or line breaks counts as a word, as long as it contains a letter or a number. Stand-alone symbols such as dashes are ignored, and hyphenated words like well-known count as one.
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?
Yes. Each character you see counts once. A few platforms weigh emoji or links differently (X, for example, counts every link as a fixed length), so treat the limits as a close guide and confirm in the app for tight posts.
Are the length limits official?
The social media and SMS figures are the platforms' published maximums, which can change. SEO title, meta description, and email subject lengths are widely recommended sizes rather than hard limits, because search engines and inboxes truncate by width, not by character count.
How is reading time calculated?
At 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 words per minute for speaking aloud, which are typical averages for adults.
