Crop to fill enlarges the photo until it covers the whole frame and trims off whatever hangs over the edges, which is what you want for a post or a thumbnail. Fit whole image shrinks the photo until all of it is visible and fills the space left over with the background colour, which is what you want when nothing may be cut off, such as a full product shot or a poster.

Cropping and shrinking a photo keeps it sharp. Stretching a small photo up to a much larger size cannot add detail that was never there, so start from the largest copy you have. Zooming in a long way has the same effect, because you are enlarging a smaller part of the picture.

Choose JPG for photographs: every platform accepts it and the files are small. Choose PNG when the picture has text, a logo, or a transparent area that must stay crisp. Choose WebP for your own website, where it gives the smallest file. For JPG and WebP, the quality slider trades file size against detail, and 80 to 90 is hard to tell apart from the original.
