Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two day counts?
“Days between the dates” counts the gaps: from 1 January to 2 January is 1 day, which is one night. “Counting both dates” counts the calendar dates themselves, which is 2. Leave forms and hotel bookings usually want the inclusive count; interest and notice periods usually want the gap.
Does it handle leap years?
Yes. Every day is counted on the real calendar, so 2024 comes out at 366 days and 29 February is included when it falls inside the range.
What if the end date is before the start date?
The size of the gap is still shown, and a note says the dates are the wrong way round rather than silently swapping them, so you can see what happened. Use the Swap dates button to turn them round.
Can daylight saving make the count wrong?
No. A date here has no time attached and the arithmetic uses whole days as integers. Tools that subtract two timestamps and divide by twenty-four hours can be off by a day across a clock change; this cannot.
Why do the months and days not match a simple subtraction?
Months are different lengths, so the count takes as many whole months as actually fit and then counts the days left over. That is why 31 January to 1 March is one month and one day rather than a negative number of days.
