Is anything uploaded when I create or read a barcode?
No. The barcode is drawn by your browser and pictures are read on your device. Nothing you type, add, or point the camera at is sent anywhere or stored once you close the page.
Which barcode type should I choose?
Choose Code 128 for your own labels, such as asset tags, shelf locations, and order numbers: it holds letters, numbers, and punctuation in a compact code. Code 39 is older and slightly longer, but it is still required by some warehouse and health systems. EAN-13 and UPC-A are retail product codes, EAN-13 outside North America and UPC-A inside it.
Can I use an EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode on a product in a shop?
Only with a number that belongs to you. Retail numbers start with a company prefix issued by GS1, and shops reject codes that are made up or copied from another product. This tool draws the barcode for a number you already have; it does not issue numbers.
What is the check digit, and why did the tool change my number?
The last digit of an EAN-13 or UPC-A is a check digit worked out from all the digits before it, so a scanner can tell a misread apart from a real number. Enter 12 digits for EAN-13 or 11 for UPC-A and the tool adds the check digit. Enter the full number and it checks the last digit for you and says what it should be if it does not match.
Why will my printed barcode not scan?
Usually it is too small, too light, or too close to other printing. Print at the size you downloaded rather than shrinking it, keep clear white space at both ends, use black on white, and print at 300 dpi or better. Increasing the bar width before downloading gives a larger, more forgiving image.
Why does the camera not open?
This site keeps the camera switched off in its security settings, and some browsers refuse camera access on a page like this one, so the button will often report that it was blocked. Reading a picture works everywhere: take a photo with your normal camera app, then add it here.
